BeadCap: all the news that's fit to string

Bead Society of Greater New York
March 2013 Update

by Marie Michal

Tziporah SalamonOn March 20, 2013, our guest speaker, Tziporah Salamon, opened her presentation with a quote from Oscar Wilde: "One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art." Ms. Salamon is both an artist AND a work of art.

All through her childhood, Tziporah's clothes were designed and handmade by her talented parents, Hungarian Jews who survived the Holocaust – her father an expert tailor and her mother a gifted dressmaker. Her mother loved to make her costumes in celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim. These included Snow White, a Persian Princess, a doughnut, one of the seven dwarfs complete with beard and last but not least, Santa Claus! Her Aunt, who was married to an executive of Neiman Marcus, would send her gifts from America including couture clothes carried by the store.

Unbeknownst to her or her family, all this exposure to fabric, sewing and clothes were laying the groundwork for Tziporah's future in fashion! At the age of nine, Tziporah and her family moved to America. As Tziporah grew up, she tried to fit in with her peers, shunning her "homemade" clothing and opting for store bought garments that conformed more to the style of her classmates. She earned a Masters in Psychology and Teaching from the University of California and completed course work towards a PhD in Psychology from the California Graduate School of Marital and Family Therapy. Eventually, Tziporah realized this was not who she was meant to be and changed course by finally choosing the path she was meant to follow which led her to the fashion capital of New York City.

Tziporah landed a job as a waitress at the prestigious restaurant/salon, Jezebel on NYC's Upper Westside. Jezebel was one of the first and most celebrated vintage clothing stores in the city with a who's who clientele of celebrities and fashion icons searching for vintage couture and style. Waitresses were required to dress and style their look with their own vintage/collectable clothing. It was here that Tziporah was discovered by New York Magazine fashion editor, Wendy Goodman who published a photo shoot of Tziporah modeling her vintage styles. This marked the beginning of Tziporah's successful career in "fashion as art".

Tziporah Salamon PosingToday, Tziporah is a well-known personal stylist, fashion consultant, and performance artist living in New York. She elevates the act of dressing to an art form that never fails to surprise, inspire and delight all those having the opportunity to see her in action.

Tziporah's advice to those seeking their own stylish image is first, get to know your body - know what to hide and what to emphasize. Study images of women you admire. Frequent thrift/vintage shops where smart shoppers can find well-made designer pieces at a fraction of its original price. One of Tziporah's favorite spots is The Antiques Garage on West 25th Street in NYC.

Tziporah's Rule: An outfit is not to be worn until you have the perfect hat, shoes, handbag and jewelry to finish off the look. In some cases, it has taken her as long as twenty years to complete a look! But the wait is well worth it as evidenced by the wardrobe masterpieces she adorns each and every day. And, when Tziporah takes to NYC streets on her bright turquoise bicycle, you can be sure that the perfect shawl, gloves and hat will be added to fend off the cold.

Tziporah's "works of art" can be viewed at The Chic Index - A Curated Survey of Individual Style, or check out the book "Advanced Style" by Ari Seth Cohen. And keep an eye out for Bill Cunningham's column in the Style Section of the Sunday New York Times where Tziporah has been featured around thirty times over the years. And if this isn't enough, she also does a one woman show, "The Fabric of My Life" and a two hour seminar, "The Art of Dressing". And be sure to visit her website at http://www.tziporahsalamon.com.
